There's so much I could write about tonight's World Music Awards; so many people I could make snarky remarks about (Avril stealing Jessica Simpson's hairstyle, me trying hard to make out an engagement ring on her finger while she was playiny guitar, Hoobanstank's lead singer singing "The Reason" off-key for like the umpteeth time, Seal... Seal?), so many questionnable celebs in attendance (LaToya Jackson? Courtney Love? Anna Nicole Smith? Seal?) and so many awkward moments I'm sure I can make fun of. But I'll refrain from my usual cynical comments and sarcasm. Because the thing is, tonight's awards show had some of the BEST live performances I have seen in a long long time!

Alicia Keys? Whoa.
Usher? Whoa. Or uh.. "Yeah!" (Although he barely sang the song, his dancing makes up for it)
Josh Groban? I love that song. The violin part just about makes me cry everytime.
Maroon 5? They are so kickass cool.
Celine Dion? I totally expected a sappy ballad and it was great for her to show a more lively, energetic performance. Plus she gave a shout out to the province of Quebec (in French no less) so that sealed it for me and helped me to look past her awkward mannerisms and weird gestures. Salut Celine!

But of course the highlight of the night... was the return of Whitney Houston. I want so badly to make fun of her and find something mean and catty to say... but I can't. Her performance was really really good. She's gone through so much these past few years that when she sang the line "I was lost but now I'm free" I felt the conviction in her voice, like she really meant it. And of course, I will always love "I Will Always Love You" and for her to deliver it still - after all these years - with the same power and emotion, was incredible.

If you missed the World Music Awards tonight, catch it again on MuchMusic this weekend.

PS> For those of you expecting my weekly Canadian Idol review, here it is in 4 words: Show - Boring. Winner - Kalan.
