Pop culture has gotten the best of me.

I met a friend's sister for the first time yesterday and the first thing I could think of to say was "wow, are you a natural brunette or did you dye your hair?" She looked at me as if expecting me to laugh off my question and call it a joke. Instead, I continued - "Cuz you know, your older sister is blond and the trend now is for the younger sister to dye her hair darker to distinguish her own identity apart from the other one..."

"Uh..." was the only response I got.

"You know, Mary-Kate did it and now Ashlee Simpson, Nicky Hilton, even Hilary Duff's sister's going brunette!"

After being met again with silence and the now slightly-modified but still bewildered look, I realized that perhaps hair colour was not a proper ice-breaker when introduced to someone for the first time. And sharing my excitement for Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashlee Simpson as I'm about to enter my last year of university is probably not a good way to introduce myself either. But just for the record, her hair colour was all natural.
