My contemporary culture and film theory course discussed today the oft-misunderstood concept of "interpellation." Interpellation refers to the way in which people immerse themselves in a certain discourse (Ie. in a TV show) and begin deriving their emotions and thoughts as if they were actually part of that show.... at least I think that's what it means... then again, I may have misunderstood. I would just like to state here in my TV/pop culture blogspot, that I, Tim Chan, am not a victim of interpellation. I am.. quite certain that Ryan and Marissa are not real people, Will is not gay in real life, and (after consulting numerous New York guides with no luck) I (now) know that Central Perk cafe is just a fictitious place built on a TV set. That being said, I just about cried today when I found out that VJ Amanda Walsh was leaving MuchMusic. She was young and from Montreal which automatically instills some adolescent transported-hometown sense of pride in me. She was also really funny and sarcastic... even snarky at times and I totally appreciated her humourous take on music and pop culture. It'll be hard for me to accept that the only three female VJs left are a ditz with a bad hair day - everyday, Cirque de Soleil Moon Frye and a mushroom. On a related (MuchMusic) note... Devon Soltendieck stalking update #3: As I correctly hypothesized, Devon is going out with Fefe Dobson. It's official. I mean, I read it on the CTV Canadian Idol message boards so c'mon, it MUST be true! And (to deviate even further from my original blog posting topic), damn those message board kids who say Jacob is going to win! Kalan will be the Canadian Idol! Kalan all the way! Uh... okay... So what's interpellation again? Whatever... I don't really think it applies to me.
